The overall construction is faultless: deep setting, fun characters, and good production values. The setting enriches the depth of the supernatural lore behind the fights, which look great and sport unusual moves.

It's almost like a magical girl series about boy and his security blanket that turns out to be a cute girl that kicks ass, and that's pretty cool, but the story turns out to be edgier than that. The protagonist is paired with the spirit of a kimono sash that was passed down from his mother and roped into exorcising aberrations of reality ("malisons"). The idea of a tool that gains sentience after 100 years (a Tsukumogami) is an interesting bit of Japanese folklore that this anime is based on. The English dub is quite good, too!Īside from that, the anime does have some merit. Extra points for pulling it off without having to resort to lewdness. This is one of the most conflicted 5 stars I had to hand out: this show is weird, not all that deep or intense, but so good. Another great character is Ameri, a voluptuous giantess of a student council president whose iron-fisted resolve is quickly undermined by girls manga.ĭespite my brain telling me what I was watching was kind of dumb, I couldn't help but grin through every episode, and some of the punchlines are surprisingly solid. They are more than happy to embrace this "friend" role after Iruma explains it to them, and are with him through thick and thin. His two besties end up being an ultra-talented but hopelessly naive preppie and the school spaz who turns the cloudcuckoolander dial up to 11.
Too bad he was hoping to keep a low profile! (It doesn't help that the school song is about eating delicious humans.) But things take an unexpected turn for the better as his lifetime of self-preservation and infallible benevolence ends up giving him an incredible lucky streak that results in friends and fame. The main conflict is that Iruma is scared of being found out as a human in the demon world.
Sold to a demon who wanted a grandson to dote on, Iruma is immediately enrolled in a highly prestigious magic demon school, a place where it's unlikely he has any chance of fitting in. This is leveraged to make relatively unique (if campy) characters, and this results in really zany (if vaguely sacrilegious) situations.Įven our main protagonist, Iruma, neatly evades the usual NEET Isekai background to instead be a bit of a luckless pushover who was exploited by his parents because he can't resist helping people (like Hayate The Combat Butler, but without a spine). Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun's setting is used effectively to break out of common tropes since most of the characters technically aren't human.
